Al Ain Zoo takes pride in its achievements in wildlife conservation, particularly with the Arabian Oryx, where dedicated efforts have contributed to their population growth, with over 300 Arabian Oryx under our care.
Since the establishment of an Arabian Oryx population in Al Ain Zoo 47 years ago, the Zoo has implemented several development and conservation initiatives specifically tailored to the species.
In recent years, there have been significant and diverse improvements in all aspects of Arabian Oryx management, aiming to enhance their well-being, standardize breeding management, and align veterinary management practices with international standards.
The Zoo's commitment to conservation is evident through its donation of over 100 Arabian Oryx for local and regional reintroduction projects and performing comprehensive DNA analysis on the entire herd to enhance and optimize their breeding management.
The Zoo also conducts exchange projects and analytical studies to assess the genetic value of Arabian Oryx populations. These efforts underscore Al Ain Zoo’s dedication to implementing best practices in managing Arabian Oryx and other species under its care.
The Arabian Oryx holds a cherished position within the Zoo, both as one of its earliest founding animals and as a symbol of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's tireless efforts in preserving this rare species from extinction since the 1970s. Sheikh Zayed, may he rest in peace, displayed a deep admiration and genuine care for this endangered creature, acknowledging its significance to the environment, nature, culture, and heritage of the UAE. In honoring its legacy, the Zoo remains steadfast in its commitment to wildlife conservation and preservation for future generations to cherish and enjoy.
