In its latest efforts to protect the endangered Arabian sand cat, Al Ain Zoo welcomed three new kittens in 2024, marking the first successful birth of this species in several years. The Arabian sand cat is classified as endangered on Abu Dhabi's Red List. This initiative is part of the Zoo's natural breeding programs aimed at conserving endangered species.

The Life Sciences team at the Zoo has initiated a breeding program specifically for the Arabian sand cat, focusing on genetic origins and appropriate age groups. The Zoo is dedicated to implementing conservation and breeding programs through specialized teams and a dedicated care center, ensuring the successful breeding of these rare animals globally while adhering to the highest standards.

In the future, Al Ain Zoo plans to study the genetic patterns of the Arabian sand cat to enhance its breeding efforts and increase the population. The Zoo aims to collaborate with both local and international organizations in conservation and protection initiatives.

One of the Zoo's most significant achievements in the conservation program for the Arabian sand cat has been its collaboration with various environmental organizations dedicated to conservation efforts.

This cooperation resulted in the establishment of the first strategy for the conservation of the Arabian sand cat, along with the release of the inaugural management plan for sand cat populations. These plans were discussed in workshops hosted by the Zoo, marking the first of their kind globally. The workshops featured participation from Arab, regional, and international experts.
