The late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God have mercy upon him) recognized the immense importance of the Ghaf tree. He protected it and designated it as the national tree of the UAE due to its significant value and deep connection with the people.
Global Distribution
The Ghaf tree is commonly found along the northeastern coast of the UAE, thriving in plains, sand dunes, and valley sides. Large forests of Ghaf trees are located southeast of Diqdaqah, while smaller clusters can be found in the expansive valleys of the Hajar Mountains.
Ghaf Planting at Al Ain Zoo
Ghaf trees are strategically planted in various locations across Al Ain Zoo. Their low water consumption and resilience to harsh environmental conditions make them ideal for landscaping projects, showcasing their adaptability to the desert climate.
Traditional Uses
Traditionally, the wood of the Ghaf tree has been used as a source of fuel and as a basic material for building homes. Additionally, it serves as an alternative medicine for treating various ailments, including conditions of the ears, eyes, and teeth, as well as indigestion. The ash from its wood is utilized to treat broken bones, while the bark is known to relieve rheumatism and alleviate pain from scorpion stings. The discharge from its branches is used as an antiseptic.
